A Fiscal Sponsor

Although we are the city of rivers, Pittsburgh lacks central public-driven leadership on the management, analysis, monitoring, planning, restoration, and conservation of its water resources from a non-profit perspective. We have a source of start-up funding, and are in need of fiscal sponsorship to explore the community need for a non-profit.

Four Mile Run needs a unified strategy for all of these partnerships and players that is able to invest and integrate into the community in order to coordinate and educate residents around water issues within the sewershed.

The 4MR Project is a generational investment in water infrastructure and is scoped to address flooding in a critical area.

The burden of a full 501(c)3 status is too large for a community group in its start-up phase, and MWP was awarded fiscal sponsorship through New Sun Rising to kick start the grassroots development stage of our work.

MWP is honored to be chosen to be a project of New Sun Rising.

New Sun Rising believes that vibrant communities are led by local people at the intersection of culture, sustainability, and opportunity

We support nonprofits, social enterprises, collaboratives, and philanthropic partners to make a greater impact. Our services include capacity building, accessible funding, and data + creative advocacy. New Sun Rising’s core values guide our commitment to an equitable & inclusive society through adaptive processes and asset-based practices. We created the Vibrant Communities Framework in order for people in the Pittsburgh region and beyond to both lead and benefit from progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Strengthening Culture, Promoting Environmental Sustainability, and Creating Opportunity

All nonprofits, businesses, elected officials, and residents create both positive and negative effects in their community. New Sun Rising and our partners work to increase net positive impacts by building a deeper, shared understanding of the issues, supporting the people working to overcome them, and getting smarter about how resources are being invested.  Accelerating net positive impacts will require greater data utilization (both quantitative and qualitative), advocacy, and collaboration in new and imaginative ways if we are serious about achieving shared goals.

To promote alignment in the conversations and collaboration necessary to expand net positive impact, New Sun Rising has adopted the Sustainable Development Goals.  This structure allows us to coordinate capacity building and financial resources while inspiring anyone who is working towards peace, prosperity, and dignity for all people and the planet.

While established globally, the goals provide a common framework to help organize stakeholder efforts at all levels (local, regional, national, and international) and from all sectors (government, nonprofit, corporate, and citizen) toward a more equitable and vibrant world.  The 17 interlinked goals have four key principles:

First,  the goals are universal and apply to all nations and communities, both developed and developing. Issues in an area will have an effect on others so it is paramount that efforts must be coordinated, intersectional, and collaborative.

Secondly, the goals merge all forms of sustainability – social progress, environment protection and economic development. For example, we can grow food to feed all without depleting the soil, develop our economies without increasing inequity, and produce enough electricity for all without emitting more carbon dioxide. This ‘triple bottom line’ approach requires balanced investments and integrated strategies from all sectors.

The third principle states that no one should be left behind. There is no progress without the inclusion of those in society who are most vulnerable: education must reach indigenous communities, jobs equitably created for all races and gender identities,  healthcare accessible for rural communities, and oppressed people centered in decision making and partnerships.

Finally, the global goals need active engagement from all.  There must be frequent and inclusive conversations which lead to action on these topics, including civil societies, the private sector and academia.

An adaptable set of strategies to ignite, launch, and grow your organizational or community capacity

At some point, the strategies used to develop our economy and strengthen our communities have become disconnected. This gap results in barriers which keep many people and places from reaching their full potential. For some, opportunity and a high quality of life seems to be everywhere. But for many, resources never reach them and the hope for a better future is difficult to imagine.

New Sun Rising believes that every community can build power to achieve their goals by organizing people and resources towards a culture of action. The Vibrant Communities Framework offers an adaptable roadmap of 18 strategies that build your capacity to attract and utilize resources based upon three stages of development – Ignite, Launch, and Grow.
