Donations Make a Difference
-
✽ Community Activation
In low-lying neighborhoods like The Run, heavy rainfall causes extreme urban flooding, popping manholes and sends raw sewage into basements, streets, and local businesses. Donating directly supports community-led stormwater management designed to protect homes and public safety.
-
✽ Environmental Literacy
Donations directly back active, hands-on programming. MWP has already delivered hundreds of hours of programming and engaged over 3,000 community participants across hundreds of regional touchpoints to educate residents on urban hydrology and watershed protection.
-
✽ Environmental Justice
MWP prioritizes equity, diversity, and community building in historically overlooked urban neighborhoods. They build neighborhood power by organizing residents, facilitating partnerships across agencies, and giving lower-income areas a unified voice in regional water decisions.
-
✽ River Ecology
During wet weather, urban run-off and overflowing combined sewers flow through outfalls directly into the Monongahela River. Supporting MWP funds projects that manage stormwater naturally, reduce untreated outfall discharge, and protecting our local river ecosystems.
-
✽ Silo Busting
Rather than treating drinking water, stormwater, and sewage in isolated operational silos, MWP uses integrated "One Water" principles. They focus on treating overlapping urban water cycles continuously, combining science-based solutions with neighborhood restoration.
-
✽ Grassroots Advocacy
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) previously designed a major 4 Mile Run Stormwater Project to address localized flooding, but it was defunded as of 2024. The Mon Water Project acts as a critical force pushing forward implementation, funding, and community advocacy for those stranded infrastructure plans.
